Abstract
This is a short story intended for junior high school students which describes some applications of scientific methods to the study of works of art. The story centers around efforts to authenticate some paintings discovered by a couple of junior high school boys. Dating of lead white in paintings by the amount of lead-210 present is discussed (uranium series dating), along with neutron activation analysis of paint pigments to determine if they match analyzed pigments known to have been used during the period when the painting was supposed to have been painted. X-ray diffraction and lead-isotope mass spectrometry are also mentioned but not discussed in detail.
