Abstract
A project to investigate archaic Greek silver coins, lead ores, and slags from Mainland Greece, the Aegean Islands, and Asia Minor is discussed. The overall objective of the project is to trace provenance of the silver and to elucidate continuity and change in smelting technology. Chemical and lead isotope characterization are the main approaches used. Destructive neutron activation analysis was permissible for some coins of low numismatic value. The procedures are described and diagrammed. The precision of the technique and possible sources of error are discussed. It is found that the elements can be arranged according to the process which they reflect, from technology to parent material, in the following order: Pb, Sn, Sb, Cu, Bi, Au. That is, while lead reflects the technology to a large degree, gold reflects the parent ore almost entirely. Results for the analyzed coins were cluster analyzed, and the resultant clusters are discussed briefly. The clusters based on neutron activation data correspond reasonably well with preliminary results of lead isotope analyses for Aegina and Athens, but not for Thasos. Implications of this contrast technological process and parent ores are discussed briefly.
