This report concerns sources of obsidian found in neolithic contexts in Israel. Source attribution was based on neutron activation analysis of 49 artifacts together with a series of analyses of specimens collected at obsidian sources in Anatolia. Pre-pottery neolithic obsidian appears to come exclusively from a single source, Göllü Dag. Later, obsidian is apparently imported from a larger number of Anatolian sources (data for later periods are not presented). These include Göllü Dag, Nenezi Dag, Lake Van, and a number which are not yet identified. It is considered puzzling that a single source of Anatolian obsidian was used throughout the 1500 or so years of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic while that source was located close to a number of other high-quality sources. Obsidian apparently was imported to Israel in the form of finished tools, as no cores and no debitage are known from Neolithic sites.
