Abstract
Finishing polyvinylchloride, especially soft polyvinylchloride, with paints is difficult owing to the high content of plasticizer. This report describes methods and results of comparison tests of adhesion using various general paints over plain, unpretreated polyvinylchloride sheets and sheets pretreated with chromic acid, trichlorethylene surface cleansing, sanding, etc. Hard polyvinylchloride demonstrated generally good adhesion, especially with acrylic resin paint and vinylchloride resin paint. However, over soft polyvinylchloride sheet, many paints were unsuccessful, some getting tacky and others showing poor adhesion. Only acrylic resin paint showed satisfactory adhesion. None of the various types of surface treatments showed effectiveness of practical value. Further study was undertaken with polyurethane polyvinylchloride combination paint, believed to have good adhesion property and tack-free performance. It was found that the paint with a comparatively higher percentage of VAGH performed better.
