Abstract
Many of Korea's legacy of works of art are, unfortunately, buried in an unknown world. In comparison to other tangible cultural properties, those excavated from a buried state (because they have been in such an unusual environment) are often fragile and in the worst condition possible. Depending on what the tiem was made of and how it was buried, dealing with the damage may be beyond the capabilities of the excavator. In light of the fact that such excavations are now steadily increasing, the importance of conserving these objects is an issue that has come to fore. Thus the purpose of this paper is to propose emergency treatment for handling buried wooden, metal and earthenware objects. It is important to prevent the changes that occur in waterlogged wood when the moisture evaporates. When these objects are kept in a water tank following their excavations, a fungicide must be used to ensure that mold does not appear. For metal objects, in certain environments the process of corrosion can be very slow if the corrosion has occurred to a certain extent where a state of equilibrium can be maintained. However in the case of excavated objects, the sudden change in the surrounding environment accelerates the process of corrosion. There for it is desirable that at the time the object is excavated, conservation treatments area also employed. In order to handle these different types of artifacts, from the time of the layers of the object analysis a conservator should be stationed on site.
