Abstract
A substantial group of bronze artifacts was excavated in Central Asia in the region of Bactria-Toharistan. The characteristic feature of this group was that the metal comprises 20-23% of tin and no lead. The technology of processing was hot forging of a previously cast blank at red hot temperature. It was found that this alloy is not well suited for hot forging and complicates it substantially. To explain this fact, an assumption was made that the metal was produced from locally available ore, comprising both copper and tin. Stanninum could serve as the complex ore. On the basis of comparative lead isotope analysis of both artifacts and ore from ancient Moushiston mines, it was shown that they could be connected. To confirm this assumption, a probe melting was executed, using the Moushiston ore. The resulting metal appeared to be identical to that of the vessels analyzed. The investigation of microstructure of both metals also showed that they were identical. The investigation of an extended set of artifacts points to the deeper roots of this tradition, but the earlier so far found are from the Saks burial mound in the eastern Pamirs and date back to the 8th-3rd centuries BC.
