Medieval enclaves with Byzantine, Gothic, and Renaissance structures, 17th-century monasteries, and other significant landmarks are being destroyed during the fighting in Yugoslavia. An art historian notes the contrast of world outrage over the smashing of the foot of Michelangelo's <i>David</i> versus the lack of action over these monuments. As of the date of this article, 380 cultural sites in Croatia have been destroyed or damaged, according to the World Monuments Fund. It is noted that monuments are often especially selected for destruction in order to demoralize the populace. Croatia's Ministry of Culture and Education has stationed officers responsible for preservation throughout the republic to remove objects from danger and record instances of damage. These lists form part of the appeals the Croatian government is sending to the international community to urge intervention. Many collections of large objects are being wrapped up and left on-site.
