Benzotriazole, a corrosion inhibitor for copper and copper alloys, has yielded inconsistent results in attempts at conservation applications. This paper is a review of the chemical properties of benzotriazole and an investigation of how to treat artifacts with the substance. On a metal surface, the film may offer some protection, but a film placed over a layer of cuprous chloride may not. An object with complex and irregular layers of corrosion and a persistent case of bronze disease would seem to offer little chance of success. On the other hand, benzotriazole may be useful for some purposes, and it is recommended that further research be directed toward the question of what might be its best uses. -- CAL
