The weaving of ceremonial dress items in the Nishijin area of Kyoto, Japan, is profiled. The making of the obi, the kimono sash, is described, and the processes of finger weaving,gold and silver-leaf applique and fully integrated woven pattern are explained. The importance of preserving this traditional textile art-craft is stressed. -- AATA
