Work on dye identification was begun at the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland in 1980. The first analytical technique used was thin-layer chromatography. Investigators there are now using ultraviolet spectrophotometry. The analyses have concentrated on the identification and characterization of natural dyes on textiles which have been singled out for work or study. Indigotin and cochineal were the dyes most often identified. However, no yellow (or associated brown and black) dyes were analyzed.
