Michelangelo's <i>Tondo Doni</i> is his only unanimously attributed, finished painting on movable support (wood). It was taken down from its exhibit place at the Uffizi Gallery when it was found to be reinfested with insects. The close examination the treatment for insects necessitated gave museum officials the opportunity to consider whether a more general intervention was called for. The philosophy of intervention on the painting is discussed. Intervention aimed at giving the intent of a work better readability, and a correct evaluation of the message it contains, is justified and legitimate. Recovering the content of the work while maintaining its overall balance was the aim of the intervention, without favoring any part that happened to be better preserved or easier to clean than others. Restoration of the frame was carried out simultaneously. The various analyses and their results (abstracted elsewhere in this AATA issue) are briefly cited. -- AATA
