Abstract
This small book on the Tondo Doni was published to coincide with the exhibition held at the Uffizi of the newly cleaned and restored painting. Iconography of both painting and frame is considered. Three separate layers of discoloration had been identified on the painting. Cleaning was done with the active solvent suspended in a water-wax emulsion. In the final stage, 40% of the lower layer of surface grime was allowed to remain particularly on areas such as the red lakes which may have faded or changed color. The picture appears so pure and brilliant in color that it is difficult to believe that any deposits can remain. Retouching of shrinkage cracks on the Virgin's blue coat was done with watercolor. The use of mastic as a final varnish, which gives a beautiful appearance but may yellow shortly, is discussed. An account is given of the investigation of the materials and technique. Samples were taken only from the extreme edge; paint media are visually estimated. The frame treatment is detailed. Individual chapters are abstracted elsewhere in this AATA issue. -- AATA
