Chemical and physical examinations of works of art conducted at the Rathgen Research Laboratory in Berlin have shown that they are an unavoidable part of historical research: they not only provide more accurate definitions of the materials used (specific metal names for the bronze group, for instance, or petrological terms for natural stone), but give information on the origin and age of the objects, and on the economic, social, and political circumstances of their manufacture. -- AATA
