Metal objects found during underwater excavations can be regenerated by being immersed in electrochemical baths where they shed their incrustations bit by bit and by careful brushing. Submerged wood must be treated promptly when it is brought to the surface in order to stop the process of deterioration. A laboratory at Marseilles has tried out a technique that consists in plunging the parts of wrecks into a chromium salt bath to harden them and then into a linseed oil bath to prevent them from becoming dehydrated. -- AATA
