Problems posed by the discovery of wall plaster which usually exists as scattered fragments at archaeological excavations include salvaging all materials, reconstruction, treatment, and display. In the field, it is important to provide immediate first-aid conservation treatment and to record properly all the fragments. Instructions are given for proper recording; the conservator rather than the archaeologist ought to be responsible for excavating and recording plaster finds. Specific measures to take in the removal of the plaster fragments are given. Laboratory conservation procedures cover cleaning and reassembly; mounting and restoration are also discussed.
