A history of the embroidered sampler and of its practical use is presented. Over the years, nearly all samplers have been enclosed in frames, and in some cases, the frame and its component protected the needlework for years while in other cases, it accelerated its deterioration. Most of the damage due to poor framing occurred at the edges but the interior area also may have holes, tears and abrasion. The treatments presented in this paper focus on this problem. The use of white muslin under the sampler is recommended.
