The subject of this paper is the unique continuity of a specific style of Mexican Indian handwoven garment, a man's simple jacket, called <i>xicolli</i> in former times, and <i>cotorina</i> now. This garment owes its 1500-year continuity to three adjustments: 1) A change of context from the pre-Hispanic prestigious godly jacket to the modern ordinary utility wrap; 2) A change of fiber from the indigenous bast and cotton to the Spaniard's wool; 3) A change of production technique from the backstrap to the treadle loom. The study of the survival of this garment over the centuries expands the definition of textile conservation by providing examples of styles that travel through time.
