Abstract
A large deposit of metallurgical debris found during excavations of a small Iron Age rural settlement in 1972 has been analysed in detail. The debris are largely unweathered and consist of hearth material and equipment, bronze and iron scrap, slag, crucibles and many pieces of clay investment moulds made by the cire perdue technique for casting bronzes – mainly chariot and harness fittings. Metal adhering to crucibles has been qualitatively analysed by emission spectroscopy and found to be tin bronze alloyed in the majority of cases with lead. The copper-base alloys, iron and steel, and the composite artefacts have been extensively analysed metallographically and manufacturing details deduced, particular attention being given to a bronze plated steel bridle bit.
