There are great differences between textile materials and collections and between storage situations. All textiles undergo deterioration and decay. Depots have in common that objects are not on exhibition, and that every measure can be taken to minimize decay. Guidelines for proper treatment of textiles are derived from standards issued by the Dutch Committee for the Conservation of Textiles in Museums. The vulnerability of textiles to changes in relative humidity (swelling and shrinkage), light, fungi and insects (at high relative humidity and temperature over 20°C), and dust is pointed out. Optimal conditions are 18°C, 50% relative humidity, darkness, cleanness. Costumes will generally be hung on a hanger with a form fitting the shoulders. The weight of heavy skirts must be taken off the shoulders by means of strings stitched to the waist seam. Wardrobes must be large enough to prevent clothes from rubbing against the doors. Flatly stored clothes should lie on acid-free paper, with supports in the folds. Textiles may be rolled up on rolls of a sufficiently large diameter, free hanging. The collection should be accessible; items must be found easily, without disturbing other objects. Special groups of objects, such as furs and unwashable pieces, are better placed together for easier control of pests. Wrapping of objects prohibits easier checking and locating, unless a photograph is attached. The regular employment of a textile restorer is recommended.
