The general increase in paintings on canvas and panels is described, as well as the phenomena of paint loss and deformation as a result of shrinkage of the support. Discusses the roles and responsibilities of the keeper and the restorer, with particular attention to proper knowledge about the structure and aging phenomena, storage conditions, handling, transportation, monitoring, and treatment. Describes requirements for storage rooms, climate control (18-20°C and 55-60% relative humidity), dust control, handling, and other preventive conservation measures. Unvarnished and impasto paintings may be wrapped in acid-free paper. Paintings consisting of different materials and other objects sensitive to dust can be placed under a perspex cover. Perspex is electrically static, and thus is not appropriate for pastels.
