Notions and considerations are discussed in approaching the conservation, if not the safeguarding, of an art object of recent date, acquired by the Netherlands government. The object is named <i>The second lodge left of Cygnus</i>, which refers to the only black hole identified at the time. It consists of a five-legged table, holding a vertical pole on which rods are fixed, connected by electrical tubing, forming a circle. A metal-coated textile screen covers the circle. The object had been dismounted after the first period of exhibition. For the sake of a second exhibition, major repairs and reconstruction appeared to be necessary. Reconstruction and reinforcement implied partial demolition of the original material for access to vital parts. Various parts had to be redesigned to ensure a stable condition during the second exhibition. The restorer seems to have been willing to consider remaking the object. He asks critically why the artist made such a poor construction, why the design was not worked out and fabricated by construction technicians, and whether it is the restorers' task to restore and conserve, or if the artist has to be asked for the repair.
