Abstract
Many questions are asked about dating techniques. It appears that it is generally unknown which technique can be applied to which type of object or material. Besides, the techniques are being performed in other institutes, or even in other countries. Three dating techniques are explained: dendrochronology, radiocarbon dating, and thermoluminescence dating. Attention is paid to the datable material, the size of the sample, the limitations in the accuracy of the result, or in the conclusion to be drawn and the period over which significant results can be expected. Various other scientific measuring techniques have been investigated with the aim of finding a dating method. Lead-210 dating (e.g., of lead pigments in paintings) is based upon radioactive decay; differential thermal analysis (DTA) measures the degree of drying (oxidation) of linseed oil on a calibrated time scale. These methods have a large degree of uncertainty and are not applied regularly.
