An historical review of the nature of patina/corrosion crusts, whiskers formed on copper and silver in the air, earth or water around them. They contain information relevant to their exposure, reflecting on their authenticity. An ethical touchstone for treatment is suggested. A study of crystal-orientation in grains located below and above the original surface may be worthwhile.
