The anthropology collections of the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, include a number of Japanese scrolls acquired during this century. They are used for research and exhibit. Recently, they were moved to storage at the new Museum Support Center (MSC) in Silver Hill, Maryland. The MSC was constructed because older museum buildings on the Mall had run out of space and was designed to provide an optimum environment for preservation and study of collections (Vincent Wilcox, 1992: personal communication). All of the museum's antrhopology collections are being moved to MSC; and, as part of the moving process, the condition of every object is being evaluated. Specialized mounts are being created to give better support for storage and handling of fragile objects (Confer, 1988; Hansen, 1987).
