Abstract
This article describes the properties and hazards associated with many solvents found in conservation laboratories. Solvents are liquids that dissolve other materials or are used to make evenly dispersed mixtures. Examples include water or organic solvents. Composition varies and solvents can either have a unique chemical structure like acetone or be a mixture like mineral spirits. Names (common, trade and chemical) and purity grades vary although each chemical should have a Chemical Abstract Number. Volatility is proportional to a solvent's vapor pressure. Threshold Limit Values printed on labels or Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) give a general indication of a material's toxicity. Health effects and fire hazards are listed with sensible precautions to observe while handling chemicals. Tables of common solvents found in conservation laboratories and their associated hazards are given.
