A new method of strip lining has been developed which can be used for restretching paintings which have tacking margins strong enough to hold the painting on a stretcher but not large enough to be used in the mounting of the paintings. Fabric strips are attached to tacking edges with a Parafilm M or a Japan paper interleaf brushed or rolled with one coat of BEVA 371 and heat. The tensile strength of this adhesive is equal to the task of stretching the painting, yet has a low peel strength for easy removal. After the painting is stretched, the strip lining can be removed by peeling with the aid of a scalpel. No excess fabric or adhesive is left on the painting.
