The technical manual covers basic materials including hardwoods and softwoods, veneers, manufactured boards, plastics and leathers, metals, adhesives, and abrasives; tools and equipment; basic techniques and joint construction; advanced areas of handmade furniture construction; metal fittings and fasteners and their application; advanced techniques such as marquetry and inlay, moldings, and curved work; running a professional workshop; draughtsmanship and workshop geometry; furniture design; restoration, repairs, and wood finishing. (Chapters of particular interest to conservators are subsequently identified.) Chapter 1 presents information on wood shrinkage, defects, wood rot, and insect pests, as well as moisture measurement and a table of properties of various woods. Chapter 47 deals with structural repairs, specifically warped tops and drawer repairs; refers to an earlier section describing scarf joints; and describes the use of Araldite in a marquetry repair at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Chapter 48 on surface damage discusses blisters and inlay repairs. Chapter 49 on finishing describes types of finishes (including compatibility), application techniques, and health hazards. -- AATA
