Three aspects must be considered in the preservation of a vernacular building: 1) purpose of the renovation; 2) deprivation or lack of original use, a need to find a suitable use for the building; and 3) improvement of the surrounding area, the dependency of the building on its surroundings. An adequate solution to the problem rests in the differentiation of the goals of the restoration and re-use of vernacular buildings according to several factors (listed in the article). -- AATA
