Abstract
The ceiling of the wooden church at Stegna, near Gdansk, is decorated with scenes and ornamental designs painted on canvas with a glue medium. The size of the decorated area is about 450 square meters. The painting probably was done in 1683, and was subsequently often repaired and repainted. Its advanced state of deterioration presented many problems far from typical. New ways of treatment had to be devised, not only on account of the size but also on account of its water sensitivity. Fixing, dismounting, repairs, conservation, reconstruction, and remounting are described. There was no relining. Methylcellulose was used for consolidating the paint layer, and a solution of poly(vinyl acetate) in toluene was applied to the back. Poly(vinyl acetate) emulsion was used to fix patches.
