Abstract
The author conducted a technical study of the Katawaguruma Raden Maki-e Tebako (box with decoration Maki-e and Raden with wheels design) registered as the national treasure. On the basis of the techniques of lacquer and Raden (shell inlay) in the 12th century and of the microscopic examination on the shape of the file used in Maki-e, the box was concluded to have been made in the 12th century.
