The author highlights the problems of alabaster monuments and emphasizes the need to respect the original polychromy. The processes of deterioration of alabaster monuments are described. Suitable cleaning methods, including recipes for the removal of dirt and grease are given. The problems of consolidation of alabaster are discussed and suitable consolidants and adhesives named. Methods of joining, using dowels and cramps and rebuilding monuments to prevent problems from rising damp are also described.
