The authors emphasize the need for all materials to be tested for the evolution of corrosive vapors before they are used in museums for either storage or display of antiquities. The theory of accelerated aging test is given and examples of harmful deterioration used as illustrations. The standard test for materials used at the British Museum is described and all details such as preparation of test pieces and assessment of results are given. The relevance of the pH of materials is also discussed.
