Abstract
The presence of lipids forming the biological film of Sacchi on the surface of stone had been repeatedly observed and analysed. We report here the presence of organic matter occuring within some carbonate rocks used on architectural monuments and famous sculptures. Samples of calcareous rocks form quarriers of Carrara, Valpolicella, San Guiliano (Pisa) and Kitminjak (Istria) were studied. The extraction of soluble organic matters in the solvents of lipids has been brought about by dissolving the samples in cold diluted hydrochloric acid and extracting the solution with petroleum ether and ethyl ether (1:1). Magnitude of extracts had 0,5 to 2 mg on 100 g of stone and we used Nano TLC on silica gel 60 F UV 254 nm plate, Merck. Problems concerning correct use, conservation, restoration of sculptures and monuments have a correlation with petrography, mineralogy bulk density and porosity analyses.
