Abstract
In previous observations on the compositional patterns of Etruscan pottery (bucchero VI-VII cent. B.C.) the presence of lipid like material in extracts according to Folch of finely milled fragments was ascertained by TLC. Attempts were made to obtain ceramic material from distant areas and borrowed from Museum collections. Samples of Apulian and Gnathian pottery were given by Archeological Museum of Bari; Greek, Etruscan-Corinthian and Bucchero fired clay types by Mr. C. Curry, Soprintendenza alle Antichità dell'Etruria. The fragments were carefully washed in destilled water and ground in a sterilized mortar; 3,5 g of the dust were extracted 3 times with CHClub>3ub>-MeOH and concentrated. The products were eluted with different eluents on Silica Gel plates. Sterols, alcohols, fatty acids, glycerides, terpens and hydrocarbons were detected. GLC was performed to identify the nature of the fatty acids. The spectra show many differences in relation to the different clay types: it seems that the lipidic composition of the old pottery diversifies from site to site. Associated with spectroscopic methods, the lipid composition of the ancient pottery may give some suggestions to determine their nature and provenience.
