Metal casting is supposed to have been introduced to the Benin empire in west Africa by one Igueghae. Two thermoluminescent dates (A. D. 1420±60, 1365±55) from bronze cores of objects from the early period associated with this figure are cited. A third thermoluminescent date (A.D. 1560±40) is given from the core of an object from the middle period, when the Iguneromwon (a metal-workers' guild) were active.
