Abstract
The adjustment of the degree of polymerization of cellulose chains takes place conventionally in large rotating drums. Inherently, this leads to a need of large space and a relatively complicated regulation of DP, particularly, in case of changing from one DP-level to another. In order to avoid these problems electron-beam irradiation has been studied on a laboratory scale. These results and further plans will be discussed in the paper. The cost of pulp raw-material is the largest single contributor to the production costs of viscose fibers. To be able to vary the type of pulps conventionally employed in viscose fiber manufacture the possibilities to reduce the amount of hemicelluloses in steeping lye has been looked into. Both laboratory and pilot-scale studies have been encouraging and indicate that ultrafiltration might be a feasible method of hemicellulose separation. Closer details will be presented and discussed in the paper.
