Abstract
Although the traditional materials used to mend photographs (wheat starch paste, gelatin, and methyl cellulose) generally give good results, there are some problems inherent in the use of a water based adhesive, including swelling of the emulsion, a change in surface when large fragments of the emulsion/baryta layer are re-adhered, and possible staining of the baryta layer if the paper support is discolored. The emulsion layer, which carries the image, poses the most difficulties. Gelatin, on which this report is focused, gives adhesion where strength is not required, as in setting down loose emulsion. Commercially available gelatins are discussed, along with the preparation of gelatin for use in photograph mending. Different kinds of tears pose different problems. A simple overlapping tear is easy to mend, while a split caused by creasing and flexing of the paper support is more difficult. In another kind of tear, fragments of emulsion and baryta layers are pulled away from the paper support. Mending treatments for each of these forms of damage are discussed briefly. There is a need for adhesives that can be used on exhibition quality prints and which do not carry the drawbacks of traditional materials.
