Abstract
Photographic materials that have been immersed in flood water undergo damage proportional to the length of time they have been immersed. Rapid treatment is necessary if they are to be saved from severe deterioration. The authors have experimented with a microwave technique for drying. The energetic properties of microwaves produce heat in many materials, including water. A drier incorporating two single mode wave guides was used. Experiments on a variety of modern and historic photographic materials indicated that the technique is applicable to photographs in a relatively good state of conservation, as long as they are treated individually rather than in stacks. Prints with very fragile deteriorated gelatine layers which will not stand up to microwave treatment must be sorted out.
