Abstract
This is a description of the systematic examination, documentation, and conservation treatment of a collection of 129 daguerreotypes acquired by the National Gallery of Canada. Treatment consisted of restoration of the package, replacement of cover glass with high-quality, anti-reflective glass, removal of unstable materials from the package interiors, and removal of dust and accretions from the image. In addition, evidence regarding the history and physical nature of the plates encountered during restoration was documented and/or preserved. This conservation project points up the importance of close cooperation between curator and conservator at all stages of treatment.
