Abstract
Properly processed, conventional silver halide black-and-white prints are stable when stored or displayed under recommended environmental conditions. The significance of processing conditions on print discoloration is reviewed. Filamentary silver images may also be subject to attack from oxidizing gases. Print discoloration may arise from environmental factors such as exhaust, cosmetic, or oil-base paint fumes. Experimental results dealing with discoloration triggered by the storage of black-and-white prints in freshly painted areas are presented. Hydrogen peroxide is shown to be mechanicstically important. Production selection and treatments are advised when it is necessary to store or display prints under adverse conditions.
