This Paracas mantle, acquired by LACMA in 1972, differs from most such embroidered alpaca cloaks in that the figures forming the central checkerboard are solidly embroidered instead of showing free-standing figures. The backing had badly deteriorated; an intervention of stabilization preceded 11 years of controlled storage. The focus of this paper concerns the reconstruction of the checkerboard, namely the placement of the embroidered squares. They were first removed from the disintegrated backing and then stabilized. Once a new backing had been successfully dyed to match the few remnants of fiber of the old one, the squares could then be sewn back into place. A new pattern had to be designed when incongruities were discovered, probably caused by the grave robbers who manupulated it at the time of excavation. The steps leading to the placement of the squares in rows according to design and color sequence clues believed to come close to the intent of the original embroiderers are detailed. Close observation of certain details pertaining to the design of the figures further allowed attribution of the squares to five, six or seven embroiderers and thus led to decisions about the grouping of the squares.
