Two air conditioning systems in the Auckland City Art Gallery normally control temperature and relative humidity at 20 degrees C and 55 percent RH, respectively. Fluctuations occur under abnormal conditions such as large crowds or rainy weather. The air conditioning systems have the disadvantage of complexity and high cost. The problem of high relative humidity is prevalent in New Zealand, and especially affects small museums and historic houses, where air conditioning is impractical. Several means of coping with this problem, such as use of replicas, silica gel, and dehumidifiers are mentioned.
