The climate control problems of the Taiwan National Palace Museum are described. The foremost problem involves the high relative humidity, with high temperatures being a second major problem. In-cabinet climate control systems that functioned only during daylight hours were insufficient as the temperature and relative humidity rose dramatically after closing time. A fully automated climate control system installed in 1985 satisfactorily controls environmental conditions throughout the museum galleries. Interiors of some of the display cabinets remained a problem, however. On the whole, the system performed satisfactorily, although it consumes a large amount of electricity. Greater economy in climate control systems could be obtained through improved building and display case design.
