Abstract
A higher rate of deterioration was observed for cotton when jute and cotton canvases were inoculated with soil extract and incubated over water. After three weeks field burial, jute and cotton canvases retained 29% and 0% strength respectively. When incubated with mixed soil bacteria, raw cotton fibers were found to suffer greater weight loss than jute fibers. Weathering affects jute slightly more than cotton.
