Abstract
Techniques of the 20th century, such as computer-aided engineering and finite-element analysis, were used to restore the 19th-century monument. The geometrical modeling is explained in depth: the equipment, program, and how it was done. Static load and dynamic analyses were performed; the effects of corrosion and the amount of metal fatigue that had occurred during the century were computed. It was determined that the skin of the head was carrying more load than its internal framework. Stereo photogrammetry played a significant role in the recreation of the torch. A program was designed to simulate the lighting of the monument to determine light placement and type of light. A computer-aided design (CAD) system was also used for documenting the restoration, but the long-term problem remains whether these records will be readable in the future because current hardware will be obsolete. -- AATA
