Rain falling on surfaces exposed to the open air is the prime factor causing chemical weathering, that is the deterioration of mineral constituting the materials. The most common types of deterioration pbserved on marble and limestone monuments are reviewed with reference to the role played in their formation by rain. Gypsum patinas on open air bronzes are also discussed. Photographs, 12 references.
