Abstract
Many hills on which historic monuments and towns are built consist of hard rock supported by a soft base (clay, marl, volcanic tuff): this often causes stability problems. Failure mechanisms of such structures are investigated by model tests. Protection measures are suggested. Bibliographic references, diagrams, photographs.
