Abstract
A comparison of different methods for the treatment of waterlogged leather was undertaken. Two water soluble silicone monomers, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, and glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane were used for impregnation and in-situ polymerisation. The other treatments tested were: luviskol k30 and peg 400 in water; polyviol 02/270 (gelgolabo), glycerine and ethanol/water; polydiol 400 and water/ethanol, water/ethanol as a control. After impregnation for 46 days, the samples were cut in two. One set after freezing was lyophilized, then conditioned. The other set was simply conditioned. Results are tabulated. The best results were obtained with polyviol/glycerine and peg 400. Lyophilization improved suppleness, except in those cases where the treatment had hardened the leather. A discussion of lyophilization and use of polyethylene glycols completes the article. 9 references.
