Abstract
Middle Minoan pottery samples from Kommos, Crete, with an overall coat of black slip and added red, orange, and white paint were analyzed by proton probe particle-induced x-ray emission (PIXE). The results provide elemental analyses that indicate the mineralogical content of the pigments. The overall coat of dark slip is colored by iron oxides. The red and orange paints are iron oxides mixed with clay minerals. There were two white pigments recognized, one rich in magnesium and one poor in magnesium.
