Abstract
The well-known engineering technique of post tensioning was adapted as the reassembly technique for a fragmented 6th-century BC marble kouros now in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum. Exhaustive studies were carried out to insure proper application of the technique and included: ultrasound evaluations of the dolomitic marble to locate weak zones and to determine the compressive and tensile strengths of the marble; tomographic mapping; parametric studies such as computerized mathematical modelling of the sculpture to determine the location and extent of stress areas under various dynamic and static load conditions. Specially designed holding mechanisms and support constructions were employed to carry out various operations such as one stage drilling and the casting of modified acrylic interfaces between the joining surfaces to assure proper distribution of the static loads. Reassembly was achieved by tension loading through a high strength cable anchored within a small diameter hole drilled along the vertical axis of both legs. Protection from dynamic loads transferred to the sculpture from seismic activities was achieved by the construction of a specially designed isolation base which allows almost frictionless movement of the object/base assembly within a predetermined area.
